Pandit Santosh Joshi( संतोष जोशी, july 2, 1960) is an Indian vocalist in the Hindustani classical tradition. A member of the Joshi Gharana (school), he is renowned for the khayal form of singing, as well as for his popular renditions of devotional music (Bhajans and Hori). He is the most recent recipient of the Rajiv ratna Award.
Early life
Pt. Santosh Joshi was born into a Pushtikar Brahmin family in the Bikaner.His father,Shiv Narayan joshi, was the legendary tabla player of Abid hussain’s Poorab (Lucknow)Gharana and student of Pt.Suraj karan ji ranga and hiru babu ganguly. Pandit Santosh Joshi’s elder brother Pt. paramanand joshi was also the renowned tabla player and Sitar player. So Pandit ji found musical environment in his family from his childhood.
Musical training and career
Pt. Santosh Joshi received his musical training of Tabla from elder brother paramanand joshi and also started lap (hawaine)Guitar playing in under guidance of Mr.G.D.Jhanwar.
pandit ji done his Visharad (Vocal) from Bhatkhande sangeet vidyapeeth, lucknow, sangeet prabhakar (in vocal and tabla), Master degree in Vocal from Indira kala sangeet vishwavidyalaya(I.K.S.University),khairagarh. Santosh Joshi has command over Ragas and most special his sweet Taans which is more intuitively than through deliberation. His music often injected surprising and sudden turns of phrase, for example through the unexpected use of boltaans. Over the years, his repertoire tended to favor a relatively small number of complex and serious ragas; however, he remained one of the most prolific exponents of Hindustani classical music and joshi gharana. Some of Joshi’s more popular ragas include Shuddha Sarang, Kalashree, Madhuvanti,Kirwaani,Malkauns, shankara, Patdeep, Charukeshi,Gorakh kalyan and Vachaspati etc. Santosh Joshi’s singing is mostly influenced by many musicians such as D.V.paluskar, Pandit bhimsen joshi,Pt.Rajan-sajan mishra, Ajoy chakraborty. Joshi assimilated into his own singing various elements that he liked in different musical styles and Gharanas.

Pandit Santosh Joshi taught many students such as Smt.Shachi Vyas,Ankita Gupta, lalit ratawa ,shubhangini vyas , swati vyas , sapana joshi and Son Bhanu pratap joshi etc.
